Separated from Mitsubishi Research Institute to become an independent entity. Established as a private limited company, Japan’s Independent Institute, with its headquarters in Takeshiba, Tokyo. Immediately began operation conducting research and analysis on behalf of governmental institutions and private companies.

Chosen in open competition to undertake a research project regarding new energy studies, on behalf of the Energy and Industrial Technology Development Organization (NEDO), an inter-governmental agency of the Ministry of Economy, Trade and Finance.This was the first time in the history of NEDO that it had consigned a research project to such a young company.

The Institute accepted a Captain from the Security Bureau of the National Police Agency on a training course. The selection of a private sector body to perform such training was a first in the history of the National Police Agency.

Department of Natural Science has gained a patent from Patent Agency of Japan on acoustical survey of methane plumes using the quantitative echo sounder.

The insitute accepte two self defence officers from the Japan Defence Agency, as a part of their training course.
